Approaches to Drawings

The founders of The Drawing Society have been repeatedly asked the purpose of the organization. The question is certainly legitimate in these days when every mail brings new announcements of worthy causes. Therefore, in this brief introduction, I would like to tell you of the Society's goals and accomplishments.

We believe that an understanding and appreciation of fine drawings is as vital to the art student of today as it was to the pictorial giants of the past. The Drawing Society was established in 1960 as a philanthropic organization to encourage in the public an interest in the historical and educational aspects of drawing. How was this to be accomplished with only limited funds available for any program?

Our first thought was a magazine of drawings. World War II had brought an end to England's Old Master Drawings periodical, and a new attempt in this direction was needed. However, at the time the cost of underwriting such a publication seemed prohibitive, and so we turned our thoughts elsewhere. I am happy to be able to report that the quarterly magazine, Master Drawings, has begun publication this year under the auspices of a commercial press. Although completely separate entities, the Society and the magazine share on their mastheads a group of distinguished scholars, teachers, curators, and collectors who have generously lent their support to the respective activities of both organizations.

The Drawing Society, shortly after its founding, made contributions to a number of museums across the country for the purchase of drawings. The drawing departments of most museums and universities have few or no funds available for the purchase of works of art in this medium. It is our hope that the Society can continue to aid these departments in the development of their study collections.

The Society, through a generous contribution, has been able to arrange for the publication by the Yale University Press of TheDrawings of Edwin Dickinson . . .
