The Spanish Civil War in Literature, Film, and Art: An International Bibliography of Secondary Literature

Synopsis

This bibliography gathers together for the first time a comprehensive and international list of titles dealing with the Spanish Civil War in literature, film, and art. It includes books, articles, and chapters in a wide range of languages, including Spanish, English, Russian, French, German, and Italian.

Excerpt

The collection of material for this bibliography has taken place intermittently over a period of almost a decade. Its origins can be traced back to my Masters thesis on the Nazi literature of the Spanish Civil War, which was supervised by Helmut Kreuzer at the University of Siegen in the Federal Republic of Germany, and to the select bibliography which Elke Nicolai prepared for the published version of my thesis. My first intention was to compile a bibliography of literary scholarship only, but I was later persuaded to include sections on film and art. I hope that in this way the book will be of assistance for cultural historians generally rather than just for literary scholars.

The bibliography includes secondary literature in the form of scholarly articles, book chapters and books. Thus I have attempted to exclude book reviews; nevertheless it is conceivable that some reviews may have been listed inadvertently. To balance this unintended over-abundance, it is also probable that there are a number of sins of omission. I would appreciate any further information regarding neglected titles so that a more complete version might be published some time in future. the bibliography seeks to include publications in all languages in the period until the end of 1993.

Special thanks are due to Elke Nicolai for her work on a first, select bibliography, and also to the library staff at the University of Siegen, Queensland University, Griffith University, Deakin University, the University of Western Australia and Flinders University. the omission of relevant material can in no way be attributed to them.
