I WAS BORN in Lübeck in the year 1875, the second son of Johann Heinrich Mann, merchant and Senator of the Free City, and of his wife, Julia Da Silva-Bruhns. My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were citizens of Lübeck; but my mother first saw the light in Rio de Janeiro, the daughter of a German planter and a Portuguese- Creole Brazilian, and was brought to Germany when she was seven years old. She was distinctly Latin in type, in her youth a much-admired beauty, and extraordinarily musical.
