Traditionalyy, one function of a preface is to acknowledge publicly the authors' indebtedness to those who helped to make their work possible. Unfortunately, in order to preserve the disguise, we cannot mention real names in recognizing the contributions of the members of the company where this study was carried on. It was they who facilitated and encouraged the study, by giving freely of their time and confidence. To the management of American Magnolite, who accepted the risks involved in turning two strangers loose in their organization, and to all the people at the company who helped to make our experience there fun, as well as fruitful, we express our profound gratitude.

Perhaps the best indication of the cooperation they gave us lies in their reactions to this material when it was submitted to them. They released for publication the entire body of data, without question. Their universal reaction was to regard this experience as an opportunity to learn something about themselves and their relationships. "It's rather a shock to see how you look from someone else's point of view," one man said, "but it makes you think. If that's the way I looked, no wonder I was having trouble." Another commented that he had never before realized the extent to which his behavior had been influenced by his feelings; from this insight he went on to consider other ways of handling his feelings in order that they might not get him into the same kinds of difficulties in the future.

Entwined with this willingness to seek insights into their own attitudes and behavior was another recurrent theme:
