Digging Up Jericho: The Results of the Jericho Excavations, 1952-1956

Excerpt

In the following pages are described the main results of the excavations carried out at Jericho between the years 1952 and 1956. The account is intended as a preliminary to the full scientific report, the publication of which must await the completion of the study of the vast amount of material found on the site.

The excavations have been carried out with the permission, and most generous support, of the Department of Antiquities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Successive Ministers of Education have taken a personal interest in the work, and the warm thanks of the bodies responsible for the Expedition to them must be recorded. Mr. G. L. Harding, C.B.E., F.S.A., Director of the Department of Antiquities till 1956, was immediately responsible for relations between the Expedition and the Department. His eminently fair interpretation of the best interests of his Department and its Museum and of Jordanian archœology in general and those of the Expedition are here acknowledged with sincere gratitude by the organisers. The personal thanks of all members of the Expedition are also due to him for kindness and most hospitable entertainment. Three members of the staff of the Department worked with us, Dr. Awni Khalil Dajani for three seasons, and Dr. Abdul Karim Gharaybeh and Mr. Mohammed Saleh each for two years; we were very glad indeed to have them with us. To Awni Dajani, also, grateful thanks are due for help, both as Inspector of Antiquities for Western Jordan and as a landowner in Jericho, in making local arrangements for the Expedition.
