The papers presented in this volume were part of a conference held in San Francisco under the auspices of the Center for Korean Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. We are indebted to the many people who helped to make the conference a success and to assist us in the publication. Prof. George Devos, then chairman of the Center for Korean Studies, was an enthusiastic supporter of the project and provided financial and administrative assistance in the organization of the meeting. Prof. Chai-shin Yu, of the University of Toronto, was part of the planning and served as one of the convenors of the conference. In addition, local arrangements came from Richard Mollot of the Museum of Asian Art in San Francisco. The Walter Shorenstein family provided funding and helped with the arrangements. The use of the meeting space at the Bank of America Headquarters allowed the proceedings to be open to the general public in a pleasing and convenient site. We thank all of these groups and individuals for the help that made the conference possible.
