Mr. Hart's annotated List of Titles interests me because he so boldly attempts what I have long regarded as impossible, and does the best he can with it. The result is far from meeting all my ideals, but it is good in many ways, and is likely to be helpful to a wide circle of book lovers.

There has long been an insistent demand for a comprehensive list of the best works dealing with all aspects of the history of the printed book, illuminated by authoritative comments for the guidance of collectors and readers. But the difficulty in making such a list, for other people, has been that the titles selected, and the opinions concerning them, could safely be submitted only to those who already know enough to make its use unnecessary. All of the books that I have examined are of uneven merit, and I do not know of any--including those that carry my own name--that are not misleading to uninformed readers. When writers who are widely recommended as leading authorities praise the works, but mis-spell the name, of the immortal Dibdin, any concise appraisal is obviously difficult.

Mr. Hart came to me with the request for such a list, to guide him in buying the books which he ought to own and read, to prepare him for a future association with an active book-making organization. As he . . .
