Each essay in this volume could well be expanded into a book. At my stage of life, however, such expansion was very unrealistic. And, yet, each contains ideas or points of view I wanted to state because (obviously) I thought they were worth stating. This is not to say that others have not dealt with the issues, but rather that I wanted to present my perspectives without having to conform to the requirements of journals in regard to format, length, and taking the views of others into account. That may sound self-indulgent, narcissistic, and arrogant to some people, which is why I resisted writing these essays.

But intimations of mortality suggested that I overcome that resistance. in struggling to make a decision, I came to the conclusion that I had, so to speak, paid my dues to the field and had earned the right to write these essays in the way I have. This is not to say that the dues I paid and the essays in this book have caused or will cause more than a ripple in the field, if that. I write for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the desire to tell my many friends what I have been thinking about. Living as we do in times when those you know, respect, and love are scattered in distant states and lands, publishing one's thoughts is the best way I know to keep in touch with them. Needless to say, if what I write gains me new friends, my cup runneth over.
