Excerpt

The following lectures were given at Cambridge on the Marshall foundation in the spring of this year. In preparing them for publication, I have made no attempt to disguise the fact that they were written to be spoken aloud. Save for purely stylistic corrections and the insertion of a few sentences here and there, designed to relieve undue compression or to reinforce a point, they remain as they were delivered. I should like to take this opportunity of thanking the members of the Economics Faculty at Cambridge for their friendly invitation and for the great kindness which they showed to a very imperfect lecturer.
