Matthew Gregory Lewis, the author of The Monk, was born in London on the 9th July, 1775. His father was descended from an ancient family, and, at the period of his marriage, held the not unimportant post of Under-Secretary for War. In addition to extensive property in the West Indies, the Lewis family were possessed of an estate in the immediate neighbourhood of Attershaw, the seat of Sir Thomas Sewell, Bart., who was Master of the Rolls from 1764 to 1784. The intimacy between the two families of Lewis and Sewell not unnaturally led to the marriage of Matthew Lewis, father of the subject of this memoir, to Frances Maria, youngest daughter of Sir Thomas Sewell.

Mrs. Lewis, the author's mother, who married when very young, may perhaps be best described as a society butterfly--careless, light-hearted, impulsive, not very well educated, and not always prudent. She is best known to the world through her correspondence with her eldest son, Matthew, who always treated her with marked respect and affection. Besides Matthew, Mrs. Lewis was the mother of three children, a son--Barrington, who was always delicate, and died at a comparetively early age--and two daughters. The elder of these daughters, Maria, married, in 1799 . . .
