W hilst attendance at international conferences is a standard activity for academics throughout the world, joint conferences held by leading universities from different European countries are somewhat rarer. This book is the result of such a conference, which was organised by the Free University of Berlin and the University of Amsterdam in order to promote cooperation in educational research between European universities. Through the comparison of methods, philosophies and examples of empirical study considerable understandings of the way the educational science is interpreted in different cultures can be appreciated. the Amsterdam / Berlin similarities and contrasts are interesting and informative. the University of London will be next to join the cooperation project. On the basis of this volume, its representatives have the opportunity to prepare their contributions. the contents of this volume, however, reflect the state of the art of research activity on the continent. As such, it will certainly inspire British scholars in the field.

From my reading of the published papers, I wish to make a number of comments.

What is the Relationship Between the Scholarly Activities Represented by these Papers and Real World Educational Issues?

Research can never match the real world in its complexity. Indeed, one of its main purposes is to focus on the mass of information and interactions . . .
