Excerpt

This book is a slightly abridged version of a doctorate thesis prepared at Oxford between 1946 and 1948. I was fortunate in having my studies directed by M. Gustave Rudler, at that time Marshal Foch Professor of French Literature. In paying my own tribute to the unfailing generosity with which he put the rich store of his unique experience and erudition at my disposal, I shall be only one of the last of a long series of British students who over many years have had reason to express a similar indebtedness.

I would wish, too, to express my thanks to Professor S. Konovalov, of Oxford University, and to Professor L. C. Sykes, of University College, Leicester, who read the typescript before it went to press, for their suggestions and corrections; and finally to Mr. H. R. Leech, of Balliol College, Oxford, for his patience in verifying an important point of detail in the Paris libraries at a time when I was unable to visit them myself.
