Excerpt

Since the opening chapter explains my point of view, there is no need to discuss or defend it here. The second chapter presents the essentials of the common New Testament preaching. This chapter is therefore basic for all that follows; the remaining chapters develop in more detail the points that appear in the outline of the basic Apostolic Gospel.

Such a method involves some repetition, but it has the advantage of giving first in general survey the basic message of the Apostolic Church, and then providing a more detailed discussion of each major topic in that outline.

My thanks go to the many students at McCormick Theological Seminary with whom I have discussed biblical theology. They have heard me try more than one pattern of presentation and finally come to the one used in this book. I also recall with pleasure the six summer weeks of 1952 which I spent teaching New Testament theology in the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. I found there another opportunity to test the outline here presented.

In the preparation of this book, as in so many other undertakings, I have been greatly helped by the kindly criticism and competent typing of my wife.
