Excerpt

The Republic of Colombia, one of the world's largest coffee exporters, and a nation that combines pride in its Spanish cultural heritage with faith in its democratic form of government, was in 1969 engaged in diversifying its economy, carrying out social reforms, improving conditions among the masses, and expanding foreign trade. Civil disorders stemming primarily from strong political loyalties were being brought under control. Modern transportation and communications were helping to strengthen the unity of a country that was formerly fragmented by geographic barriers, and to increase its awareness of the outer world.

This book represents an effort to provide a compact and objective exposition and analysis of the dominant social, political, and economic characteristics of Colombian society. It is designed to give readers both within and outside the government an understanding of the dynamics of the component elements of Colombian society and an insight into the needs, goals, and achievements of its people. A large number of consultants, many of them with firsthand knowledge of the country, have provided data not available in printed sources. The authors alone are responsible for the final draft.

English usage follows Webster's Third New International Dictionary (unabridged). Spanish words and phrases, which have been used only when adequate English equivalents were lacking, are defined at first appearance. If they are employed frequently, they are listed in the Glossary. Spanish is based on Appleton's Revised Cuyas Spanish Dictionary, fifth edition.
