Excerpt

The material in this book is presented through the courtesy of the publishers of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The text is composed of a selection of articles from its pages, and to its editors we are indebted also for the use of the many colour-plates and other illustrations.

Probably between no other two covers could such a mass of authoritative and enlightening material be found. The work is not simply that of a single critic presenting an individual opinion and possible prejudice, but rather the composite production of some twenty-six scholars and artists each eminent in his own field, and each contributing a signed article on that phase with which he is particularly identified. The entire subject of painting as a fine art from mediaeval times until the present is dealt with by those whose standing is indisputable.

We are proud of having received this opportunity to present such a valuable compilation at a price which nothing but the complete coöperation of the publishers of the Encyclopaedia Britannica could have made possible.
