Excerpt

It is the hope of the author that some breath of life has been injected into this study of a little known figure in a period of importance in the economic development of the United States. The materials for its composition have been gathered chiefly from the libraries of the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania, The American Philosophical Society, The Library Company of Philadelphia, the Library of Congress, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and The Historical Society of Maryland. The author is grateful to the Lessing Rosenthal Fund for Economic Research for financial aid making possible the prosecution of this study. Thanks are tendered to Dr. Broadus Mitchell for his kindly interest and helpful assistance.
