This study was originally undertaken in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan. For purposes of publication it has been considerably enlarged and altered. I have been much assisted in the work of revision by the kind advice and criticism of Professor Hyder E. Rollins of Harvard University and Professor Henry Ten Eyck Perry of the University of Wisconsin.

My chief indebtedness is to Professor Oscar James Campbell of the University of Michigan, who suggested the subject of my dissertation and under whose direction the entire investigation has proceeded. It is quite impossible for me to express at all adequately my gratitude for Professor Campbell's ever generous faith in the work and exceptionally stimulating guidance. To him this volume owes whatever significance it may possess as a study of the Restoration comic mode.
