As I have put aside several publishers' proposals for books in order to write this one, and as, in my eighty-fourth year, the time I have left gets shorter, there must seem to me special reasons for setting about it.

There are three.

The book is a work of piety in memory of the first editor of the newspaper on which it was the distinction of my young manhood to serve, a record of his outstanding work and worth, which someone ought to have written long before this.

It is an act of devotion to ideals of journalism which I have urged for sixty years, and helped to maintain in the Pall Mall Gazette . . .
