Humankind could cherish and conserve the planet's wondrously diverse community of life. We humans could help build a future in which both natural splendor and human dignity would flourish.

We could help create a world that affords freedom and ample sustenance to every person, a world where the windows and doors of education are open to every child, a world where everyone can share in the dignity of work and play, a world where all creeds, races, tribes, and nationalities celebrate their differences and commonality as one human family. At long, long last.

None of this will be easy, but all of it is possible. If we are willing -- very willing. Our helping to create a sustainably bountiful future will require studious attentiveness, inspired dedication, moral courage, tireless perseverance, exuberant creativity, sufficient wisdom, and a laugh-at-ourselves sense of humor.

COMPONENTS

The difficulty of the enterprise is matched only by its complexity. The project of building a sustainable humane future is essentially a union of numerous component tasks, large and small, all interrelated.

Among those tasks are arms control and peacekeeping, preservation of remaining natural ecosystems, reforestation, ecologically sound water management and agricultural development, soil conservation and restoration, land reform, pollution abatement and waste management, development of environmentally sound energy systems, energy conservation, other-scarce-resources frugality, preservation of cultural diversity, respect for human rights, attainment of economic and social justice -- and prevention of overpopulation.

REASONS FOR FOCUS

This book concentrates upon the world population crisis not because resolving that crisis is somehow humanity's only needed step toward a future of sustainable well-being. Instead, the book's focus on population results from the coalescence of three considerations:
