These two volumes represent in slightly longer and less informal shape the lectures delivered under the title 'Religio Medicorum ' in the Martin Hall, New College, Edinburgh in May 1951 and 1952. The audacity of attempting to treat so large and necessarily detailed a theme and the consciousness of the gaps in my own equipment for it made the prospect of their delivery an ordeal. The generosity and encouragement of the University and of the audience have transformed it in retrospect into a singularly happy remembrance. To express gratitude to all who were kind to me would involve a long list of friends old and new: to single out any is liable to be ungracious. Sir Edward Appleton, Principal of the University and Principal John Baillie of New College will, I hope, consent to represent their colleagues and guests. To them and to all concerned both in the preparation and the delivery of the lectures I can only say: Thank you with all my heart.
