Excerpt

The original suggestion which led to the writing of this book came from the Swiss organization Pro Helvetia soon after the end of the Second World War. Circumstances have prevented its completion as quickly as was originally hoped and the authors express their gratitude to Pro Helvetia and to its secretary, Dr. Naef, for much help and forbearance. Chapters I to V have been written by Mr. Offler, Chapters VI to VIII by Professor Potter, and Chapters IX to XII by Professor Dr. Bonjour. Mrs. Hottinger of Zürich translated Professor Bonjour's section at a time when she was busily engaged with other work. Our thanks are also due to Mr. G. R. Crone, Librarian of the Royal Geographical Society, who helped in securing material for the compilation of the maps, and to the Librarians of the University Library of Basle and of the Zentralbibliothek at Zürich.
