Preface

SPONSORED BY the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library and by the Department of English of the University of California, Los Angeles, a seminar on editing English literary texts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was held at the Library on 22 November 1952. The seminar met in two sessions. In the morning Professor George R. Potter reported on the problems he and Mrs. Evelyn Simpson have faced in editing Donne's sermons for the University of California Press. In the afternoon Professor John Butt gave an account of the methods employed in the Twickenham edition of Pope. The remarks of both speakers led members of the seminar into a searching discussion of techniques applicable in editing writers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

We believe that the papers of Professors Potter and Butt will be of interest to a large group of scholars in the Humanities. We have accordingly arranged to have them distributed in the form of this pamplet.
