The Fascination of the Abomination Poems, Stories, and Essays

Excerpt

Like its predecessor, The Boy from Iowa ( Macmillan, 1962), this volume is a miscellaneous collection of writings which have, with a few exceptions, appeared in various magazines over a period of years. Appropriate acknowledgments are made below, but of the essay, "The Fascination of the Abomination," I should say that, while it has never before been printed, some of my comments in it on Shaw appeared in the Tulane Drama Review in an essay entitled "Shaw's Abstract Clarity"; and I also wish to acknowledge my debt, in the essay on Browning, to Elvan Kintner of the Carleton College English Department and to Howard Nemerov of Bennington College for their suggestions and advice, as well as to Betty Miller for her biography of Browning, and to William Clyde DeVane for various works on Browning, particularly A Browning Handbook.
