Excerpt

The six lectures that compose this volume were delivered at the Johns Hopkins University in April and May, 1914, being the nineteenth course of lectures on Poetry on the Percy Turnbull Memorial Foundation. They are printed as delivered, except for such slight emendations as naturally suggest themselves when one prepares a manuscript for the press. Since the plan of the book excludes footnotes, I wish to make the fullest kind of general acknowledgment to Chaucerian scholars in both hemispheres for the help which their published writings have afforded me. To the founders of the lectureship, and to my friends and colleagues in Baltimore, I am deeply indebted for their cordial expressions of interest and their delightful hospitality.

CAMBRIGE, January 22, 1915.
