Excerpt

This is a revised edition of Egypt: An Economic and Social Analysis which was held up in the press by war-time shortages until 1947. Although not formally so divided, that book consisted of three parts: a sketch of the physical and historical background; an analysis of the major branches of the economy; and a description of some aspects of the country's political, social, and cultural life. In the present edition the first part has been slightly modified in the light of some of the research that has recently been published; the second part has been entirely rewritten, and expanded; and the third part has been replaced by a single chapter. Having been absent from Egypt for some years, except for short visits, I do not feel qualified to give a detailed description of its present social and political problems, and have confined myself to a brief account of the main trends.

A book like this can make no claim to originality, and a glance at the references quoted in it shows how great is my debt to the numerous works, published in the last few years, on various aspects of Egypt's economic life. Other debts, to friends and colleagues who have read and improved different chapters, are too numerous to be acknowledged. I cannot, however, fail to thank Professor H. A. R. Gibb and Mr. A. H. Hourani for their great help, Miss H. Oliver for editing the text and Mrs. P. Keller for typing the manuscript. And, at the risk of repeating the statement most frequently made in prefaces, I must thank my wife for her invaluable aid.

In conclusion, there is one disclaimer that must be made. During the last few years, I have been a member of the Department of Economic Affairs of the United Nations, but the views expressed in this book are my own and do not in any way reflect those of the United Nations or any other organization.
