Excerpt

This book is based on the pamphlet by the same title issued by the American Civil Liberties Union in 1937, as revised in 1941, 1945, 1949, 1952, 1955, and supplemented in 1957. This revision goes to June 1959, the end of the 1958 Term of the Court.

The subject is treated under various topical heads, as listed in the Table of Contents. The cases cited in the text are listed chronologically under each of these heads, commencing on page 149. Each case is also cross-indexed to the page or pages of the text on which it is referred to. In addition, cases mentioned by name in the text are listed in the Index.

I wish to express my appreciation to Alan Reitman, Associate Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, for his assistance in seeing this work through the press.
