Excerpt

The first part of this collection is made up of a few poems from my first book, Poems ( Fortune Press, 1939): the last part consists of recent and previously uncollected poems. The other parts contain respectively most of the poems in The Middle of a War ( Hogarth Press, 1942), A Lost Season ( Hogarth Press, 1944), Epitaphs and Occasions ( John Lehmann, 1949), Counterparts ( Derek Verschoyle, 1954), and Brutus's Orchard ( André Deutsch, 1957). (One or two war-time poems which appeared in Epitaphs and Occasions now take their appropriate place).

The poem 'On the Mountain' is greatly indebted to Moses Hadas's translation of Burckhardt The Age of Constantine the Great.
