The Life of St. George

Excerpt

The Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, have graciously permitted the reprinting of Barclay Life of St. George from the unique copy preserved in their Library. To my colleagues at Columbia University, Professors Elliott Van Kirk Dobbie and Edward Semple LeComte, I owe thanks for the detection of errors that had escaped me and for numerous valuable suggestions. Miss Ruth Montgomery and Mrs. Carol Trosch typed and proof-read much of the text. My wife's part in the book only St. George can properly acknowledge. But I cannot omit expression of gratitude for the help and encouragement given to me since 1937, when I happened upon Barclay's poem, by friends and teachers who are now dead: Harry Morgan Ayres, Ray Heffner, and Henry K. Dick.

A second printing of this edition gives me the opportunity of correcting errors and supplying omissions pointed out in reviews by Miss Beatrice White (Review of English Studies, 1957, pp. 184-5) and Mr. T. S. Dorsch (Modern Language Review, 1956, p. 582).
