ACT I

Open scene. At the rear the sea, whose level shore rises toward the left in a series of rocky steps. Close by the shore an altar to Aphrodite. Right forward, the entrance to a grotto, overgrown with shrubs and ivy; farther back, the end of a colonnade with steps that lead to Sappho's dwelling. Left forward, a tall rose-bush with a turf-covered bench before it.
