An Economic Geography of Oil

Excerpt

This short book aims to present an analysis of the distribution of the activities of the world oil industry. In making this attempt I am conscious of the magnitude of the task, which arises not only from the size and complexity of the operations involved in getting over 1000 million tons of oil a year out of the ground and through the various stages of manufacture and transport to the consumers throughout the world, but also from the diversity of the industry's organizational structure ranging from the vast internationally integrated private enterprise companies, to the state-owned undertakings of the communist countries and of various other countries of the world and to the large number of small companies, some involved in all aspects of oil operations from exploration to marketing, but many more involved in only a single aspect of the industry. Limitations on space present one handicap to my doing full justice to the subject but of much greater significance in this respect is my own inability to grasp and to bring out all the relevant factors which contribute to the geographical distribution of the production, refining and consumption of oil.

It seems, therefore, that my temerity in writing this book needs some justification. Essentially I would argue the need for an introductory study of the distribution of oil industry activities. While the developments and changes are reported and analyzed extensively in a plethora of technical and trade journals and governmental and intergovernmental reports, nevertheless the industry has not been the subject of a great deal of basic geographical analysis on a world basis. It is this gap which the book seeks partly to fill.

If I have succeeded in this task to even a limited degree, the book may be useful to those students and teachers who are participating in the rapid growth of the study of economic geography. I also hope that students of other disciplines . . .
