This book has three principal aims: to present a picture of the life of a South American Indian tribe as it is today; to analyze the processes through which this society has evolved to its present form; and to relate conclusions derived from the study to the general body of anthropological theory.

The material on which the work is based was gathered by my wife and me during a field investigation among the Mundurucú Indians of the Tapajós River in the State of Pará, Brazil.
