The Pere Marquette Lecture has this year a somewhat particular purpose, deriving from the fact that Fr. Bernard Lonergan has just completed three- quarters of a century of life. There are family ways of celebrating such an event, but the academic world has its ways too; for that world is not so inhumanly academic as to ignore the milestones in the lives of its leaders, or to fail to celebrate those milestones with its own modest pomp and appropriate ceremonies. And so, joining friends of Fr. Lonergan around the world, we offer this lecture to honor one who has deserved well of the world of learning, in its secular as well as its religious branches, to express our gratitude for the notable benefits he has brought to the fields of theology, philosophy, and the range of sciences, both natural and human, and not omitting to ask ourselves what might be a suitable . . .
