Excerpt

No well-brought-up Englishman (if I may be permitted such redundancy without offense to my honorable countrymen) can, without loss of dignity, talk about himself, especially at the beginning of a story. But, like space travelers who when they reach a certain height are no longer subject to the laws of gravitation, once landed on the Continent I no longer feel bound by the laws of British gravity. And as I am to talk about people to whom I have never been formally introduced, I feel rather more free in doing what is not done--that is, in giving information about myself which in England would seem uncalled for.
