Our age has witnessed valiant efforts on both sides of the shrinking Pacific to achieve understanding between East and West. Yet one active generation can only begin to redress the balance tilted so heavily toward the transatlantic community. In the field of folklore, as in other branches of learning, ties formed by cultural origins and intellectual models have bound the United States to Europe. Colonists and immigrants brought with them Old World folk traditions, and in recent times American folklorists have followed the methods and theories of their European colleagues.
