(To R.)

Laugh not, beloved, when I sing of saintly love Isolated in angelic mood, wooed in whispers of modest doves. Laugh not, beloved, when I stride in the path of your candlelight Piercing the silent darkness, revealing shadows of my anguished plight.

Laugh not, beloved, at my pale and trembling face When I sob in despaired wisdom of another love you grace. Laugh not, beloved, for my barren squalor may be thine When I capture your frosted soul finding favor before your shrine.
