NOTE

I am conscious that occasional sentences and even passages in this pamphlet bear a close resemblance to sentences and passages in my biography THOMAS GRAY ( Cambridge University Press, 1955). This was, I think, inevitable; for when a writer has once done his best to express an opinion, or to appraise a poem, or to describe a human being, he finds it extremely difficult to say the same thing over again in different words. For a similar reason, virtually all the passages quoted here from Gray's poems and letters were also quoted in the biography.
