Caste Today

Excerpt

Where a caste name indicates the occupation of the individual I have used no capitals; the capitals refer to the caste name irrespective of the occupation of the individual concerned, i.e. a moneylending Sweeper is a man of the Sweeper caste actually engaged in lending money; whereas a Moneylender may not necessarily earn his living by lending money.

The spelling of certain Indian names varies according to the spelling given by the authors quoted.

I want to thank Sir H. M. Patel, Professor D. R. Gadgil and Doctor A. C. Mayer for their kindness in reading the MS. I am specially grateful to Mr. Philip Mason for his critical editing and helpful suggestions and to Miss M. Usborne for her patient work on the MS. I also want to thank Miss Vicky Sinclair for her typing and Mrs. J. F. Sinclair for the interest she has taken in this booklet. And last but not least, I want to thank my husband for putting at my disposal his Indian experience and his bureaucratic precision.
