A History of the Church - Vol. 1

Excerpt

The unexpected chance that this first volume of A History of the Church needs to be re-set before it can be reprinted has given me the very welcome opportunity of revising the text, of correcting errors of fact, and of adding considerably to the bibliographical notes. The only notable addition to the text is the short section on Mani and his religious system as the study of the ChesterBeattie papyri has now made this known.

The long history is divided on lines that are, I venture to think, truer to fact than the more usual divisions. This volume deals with The Church and the World in which the Church was Founded-- that world which was politically Roman and culturally Hellenic; and it takes the story as far as the breakdown of that culture in the West and its transformation, in the East, into the new Byzantinism. The second volume is called The Church and the World the Church Created. It deals with the fortunes of the Church in that medieval world built up on the debris of the Romano-Hellenic culture in the West; and it ends at the time when that new culture is beginning to turn against its chief architect -- the close of the thirteenth century. Finally there remains the story of The Church and the Revolt against it of the Church-created World, and this, in the third volume, now published, is told as far as the appearance of Luther.
