Indonesia is a land of superlatives. It is also a land of paradox and, recently, one of violent and pervasive change. For the past twenty years, her people have been undergoing a series of revolutions: political, economic, social. As a result, the contemporary Indonesian scene sometimes appears to be an endless succession of crises.

This book is intended to introduce the Republic of Indonesia to those who have no prior acquaintance with this island nation. For these readers, the day to day backings and fillings of the country's principal groups and leaders are not as important as a general understanding of Indonesia's culture and the recent experiences which have shaped the Indonesian people's outlook on today's world. I have therefore avoided detailed accounts of the intricacies of current politics and economics; these events can be followed in the daily press. Instead, I have concentrated on those essentials which, in my view, will help to provide some useful background against which to assess contemporary developments in Indonesia.
