To the late Charles A. Brown '79, a trustee and generous benefactor of the University of Rochester, who presented his remarkable collection of autographs to the Library of the University in 1914, this annotated catalogue is in some sense a memorial. For some years after Mr. Brown made this gift he continued to add to it, until the number of autographs and manuscripts reached a point where systematic classification and cataloguing became essential. In addition to the Brown letters other manuscript material was presented by friends of the University, most of which is incorporated in this catalogue. It should be noted that many of the items which have no intrinsic value are among those contained in extra-illustrated volumes which Mr. Brown purchased after the Grangerizing had been finished.

Dr. Robert Frederic Metzdorf, curator of the R. B. Adam Collection now on deposit at the University of Rochester Library, and bibliographer on its staff, in his doctoral dissertation completed in 1939, two typed copies of which are in the Library, treated at some length the bibliographical and historical problems raised by the following thirty-two items: . . .
