The Portuguese court had been gloomy enough before, but tragedy now fell upon it with the piercing screams of the sovereign, Dona Maria I. Dr. Willis was sent for on the run, for it was he who had succeeded in curing the king of Englandof his madness. The physician's services, however, were of little avail. The queen continued to have horrible visions as devils sprang up out of every corner with glowing tridents in their hands amid a sea of flames. It was Beelzebub himself, with his hot breath, uttering eternal curses. Afterward there would be a long period of calm followed by epileptic attacks or fresh manifestations of hysteria, one fit succeeding another with painful regularity.

This saddening spectacle was due to a morbid heredity that in the case of the Portuguese royal family had been aggravated by consanguineous marriages. Daughter of Joseph I, a gouty and epileptic monarch with ulcerated legs that interfered with his lumbering gait, and the Spanish princess Mariana Victoria, who had passed on to her the mysterious nervous affection of Philip V, the unfortunate Dona Maria had not been able to escape all these degenerative stigmata.
