When Cervantes sent Don Quixote on his road, he had not much notion of where the knight would lead him. Three and a half centuries later, as I prepare to follow, I know only in terms of geography where I shall go. As I write this chapter I am still at my home in Tangier, and I shall make it a point of honour to alter the chapter not at all when I have finished my journey. I shall let the story run with its events, not come limping after them picking up faded recollections.

This is not, after all, taking any great risk. I know that Spain will not disappoint me; I know there will be a story to tell. I know that in every group of Spaniards, deceptively unremarkable in appearance, there are found the egregious . . .
