The Youth of Virgil

Excerpt

Professor Nardi's little book, La Giovinezza di Virgilio (Mantua, 1927), is here presented in an English version, with corrections and enlargements by the author. It deserves a wide circulation as one of the best brief accounts in existence of Virgil's youthful career and of the historical background both of the Eclogues and of whatever poetry had preceded that work. No two Virgilians will agree on all points in anybody's interpretation of the Eclogues or of the minor poems contained in the so-called Appendix Vergiliana, but any candid scholar will admire the skill with which Professor Nardi has sifted the bewildering array of information and misinformation in the ancient commentators, and the wise caution with which he has avoided the lure of plausible hypothesis. He would cheerfully admit that on various matters the last word remains to be spoken, if spoken it ever can be. Meanwhile his book will be found a useful addition to school and college libraries and will enlighten Virgilian scholars on not a few points. All may enlarge and some may even modify the opinions that they have rigorously entertained before. Crede experto.
