P sychoanalysis has been around for more than a century and has proliferated widely. I wrote this book to provide an introduction to what I consider to be the main currents in psychoanalytic thought.

I have taught introductory and advanced courses on various aspects of psychoanalysis for nearly two decades. During this time, I have been struck by the lack of an accessible, non-doctrinaire, critical textbook that covers an appropriate range of contributions. One day a friend and colleague said, "Why don't you write one yourself?" And so I have.
