The publication of the History of Trade Unionism in cheaper form, nearly eight years from the date of its completion, gives us the opportunity of writing a new introductory chapter.

We make no attempt to bring the history down to the present date. Directly the book was through the press in 1894, we turned to the examination of Trade Union problems, to which our closing paragraph had referred. That work grew upon our hands until it included an analysis, not of Trade Union problems alone, but of almost every phase of the organisation and regulation of labour, Factory Legislation no less than Trade Union regulations, and finally also a critical examination of the working of the machinery of Democracy, and a new exposition of the economics of the wage-contract. Industrial Democracy, as we ventured to call our work, was not published until the end of 1897, and we were thus able to include the principal developments of Trade Unionism down to that year. A new edition, published almost simultaneously with the present volume, has permitted us to add a further introductory chapter, stating briefly our impressions of the latest developments.
