Excerpt

This book has resulted from a catalogue of the books printed by the Southworth-Anthoensen Press and its predecessor, compiled by Miss Ruth A. Chaplin, head reader of the Press. She assigned to me, as being the only person who could give the account, the task of writing the story behind them.

In the following pages, I have endeavored to highlight some of the accomplishments of the Press since it began seriously "to produce books and other kinds of printing according to what I conceived to be their true use and purpose." This summary will aid materially in comprehending the typographical advancement of the Press, and will preface Miss Chaplin's bibliography, which otherwise would remain just a list of books.

Important as were the early ideals, to a greater extent were the commissions of the clients who sustained us, and the friends who praised our work, for without them the modicum of success attained would not have been possible.
