Fifteen years ago we knew very little of the course of events which gave birth to modern China, and nothing at all about the history of the Chinese people prior to the earliest legendary dynasties.

During these fifteen years epoch-making discoveries have been made and vast collections have been brought to light by numerous energetic workers. Research has erected a number of milestones, by the guidance of which we can safely journey to certain nodal points in the history and development of the country and its people.

But, nevertheless, research into the prehistory of China has only just begun, and it will require the systematic work of generations before our knowledge of that part of the world is in any degree complete.

When I sat down to write an account of my own studies in the prehistory of China, intended, not for experts, but for the general public, which may possibly interest itself in so remote a subject, I was fully conscious of the gaps in our knowledge. Certain stages of development appear in the full daylight, but in others we can only grope our way to the truth! At other times there is impenetrable darkness.

Under these circumstances I was able to choose one of two methods of presentation. I might endeavour to fill out synthetically the voids in our knowledge. Proceeding from a certain group of ascertained facts I might seek to reconstruct the most probable course of development to the next known point.

But I am convinced that it will be possible to make a presentation of the kind just described more easily and with better claims to reliability in about fifteen years' time, when the arsenal of ascertained facts will doubtlessly have been increased manifold.
