Selected Poems of Amy Lowell

Excerpt

AMY LOWELL'S collected poems, including the translations, number more than six hundred and fifty titles, in eleven volumes. Few readers have access to all eleven books, and this volume is designed to make available within brief compass a selection from her most distinctive work. There will be, without question, both omissions and inclusions which one or another reader will regret. That is inevitable. But all eleven volumes are represented, as are all Miss Lowell's characteristic verse. forms. Considerations of space have made necessary the exclusion of most of the longer verse-narratives. In two cases, however, excerpts have been admitted; otherwise all the selections are complete. It has seemed best to group the poems in accordance with their more or less obvious kinship in theme or treatment, rather than to follow the order of publication. An index by volumes, however, is provided. For reasons which need no comment the first and second poems have been chosen from the first and last published volumes respectively. For the rest, the selections move, in the main, from the centre of Miss Lowell's world toward its remote periphery:

Lilac in me because I am New England,
Because my roots are in it.
