In 1919 there was published as No. 6 of the "University of Wisconsin Studies in Language and Literature" a study of "Goethe's Lyric Poems in English Translation Prior to 1860" by Lucretia van Tuyl Simmons. The present volume contains the results of a similar investigation for the years 1860-1924.

Since this is then to be the completion of and the companion volume to the above study, I will follow in general the same method of procedure, giving as the principal feature the bibliographical indexes and aiming only secondarily at any critical evaluation. Naturally many critical and historical problems suggest themselves but these transcend the limits of the present study, since they would have to be based on a consideration of the entire period and not only on that part treated in the present volume. These will no doubt soon engage the attention of other investigators with other and varying points of view.

In some respects, however, there is a marked variation from Miss Simmons' treatment. The mention of book reviews from indexes C and D has been omitted. This for two reasons. The books reviewed after 1860 are in most cases more accessible than those farther removed in time, and the reviews and criticisms themselves become constantly shorter and more perfunctory, hence of less value. Those reviews, however, that are of interest have been made use of in the chapters dealing with the books reviewed.

Another departure is the addition in index E, of the first line of every poem, or where necessary of the first two lines. It is hoped that this will materially enhance the value of this index. Were it possible to have index E complete, final, and exhaustive, the addition of first lines might be of less importance. But since, despite careful and conscientious work, this is out of the question, it is hoped that these initial lines may prove of help in determining the authorship of anonymous translations appearing in books and magazines, that have thus . . .
