Excerpt

The purpose of this thesis is to show and prove by the testimony of competent authorities, the influence of Poe on French literature in general, and to trace his special influence on French poetry. After this will come a study of the significant part Poe had in the development of several literary movements in France. This will be followed by a short parallelism with some well-known French poets. Successive chapters will be devoted to Poe's influence on the fantastic story and novel, on the pseudo-scientific novel, on the detective novel, and on the French drama.

In the Spanish centennial article on Poe, Angel Guerra, "who," states C. A. Smith, "has been rated as 'one of the four greatest living Spanish critics,'" writes: "Edgar Poe's native land is America: ... his elevation to immortality, with justice due to his merits, is the gift of generous France."

While it is generally well-known that Poe has been and is still very popular in that country, the full importance of his influence there, is not, perhaps, fully realized, not only by the majority of the reading public, but even by his most sanguine admirers.

"America" to use Mr. Camille Mauclair's own words, "does not seem sufficiently aware that the greatest of her spiritual sons has exercised a considerable influence in Europe."

"As a matter of fact, writes Dr. Thomas Ollive Mabbott of Columbia University, the chief authorities on Poe have taken relatively little interest in his influence, for some reason."
